Protecting this iconic species should be everyone’s business.
A dozen fresh groupers piled up on the counter of a Tangier restaurateur right in the middle of the species’ biological rest period. The photos have been circulating since Wednesday on the specialized pages of social networks, resulting in a flood of incredulous and disgruntled comments. And for good reason, the grouper is a species as emblematic and sought following as it is rare and threatened. Some accuse divers who use underwater propulsion devices that emerged before the laws prohibited them. Amateurs of recreational spearfishing defend themselves and point the finger, for their part, at the illegal activities of artisanal fishing and certain professional underwater poachers.
