He College of Surgeons of Puerto Rico recently held its annual meeting, in which important decisions were made regarding medical practice and the protection of the rights and well-being of patients.

“Taking advantage of the assembly, I convened a topic in view of the situation we have of the crisis of health and given the latest changes in the moves that insurers have made with our colleagues in their contracts, an initiative that the college has taken to create the medical front law,” said Dr. Carlos Díaz, president of the College of Surgeons of Puerto Ricoexclusively for the Medicine Magazine and Health Public.

This agreement represents a significant step in the search for high-quality medical care and effective protection for the rights of doctors and patients in Puerto Rico. In addition, the president reported that more than 500 doctors joined in favor of the cause, which represents great support within the community.

Why was the Medical Front created?

Dr. Díaz explained that the initiative of the Medical Front It was created to continue strengthening and creating something different from what had not existed before in the College.

He also clarified that the Medical-Legal Frontis a group of professionals from the health and attorneys who will work together to address the legal and ethical challenges facing medical practice today.

“And more medical lawyers that we are summoning are going to join, because the college decided to move its battle, not to the battle of the media, not to the battle of the legislature, yes we are going to continue, but truly, here the government is not is doing its thing, it is not listening to the providers, it is not listening to the doctors, but we are going to have to go to the legal forums, both local and federal states, to stop the abuse“said the doctor.

Complaints in the commissioner

Dr. Díaz said that they have already met with the insurance commissioner, who has been totally willing to address their complaints, however, he stated that it has not been an easy process.

Similarly, from the College of Surgeons of Puerto Ricothey want to encourage doctors not to give up carrying out their complaints, for which they propose to give them help so that these issues are not left aside without being seen before the commissioner.

“If we have to go to court in Puerto Rico, we are going to do it, if it is as an individual, we guide the doctor, if it is as a group, we are going to guide him, we are going to be very active in this new medical-legal strategy,” he emphasized. Dr. Diaz.

Some doctors have decided to leave the island

Now, this medical crisis that the island is facing has made several doctors decide to leave in order to avoid it in a certain way, which has caused a decline in the quality of the health of the Puerto Ricans.

“Insurers abuse, because they have a monopoly in Puerto Rico, they control what they do not control in the United States, there it is 33%, here it is 95% controlled, there is a abuse to crush the medical class”

possible union

Consequently, Dr. Díaz pointed out that his goal is to convert the institution into a union, since he states that there are no laws that support the contracts given by insurers, “some laws would have to be amended, some legal changes would have to be made in the civil code to turn the school into a union,” he added.

For this reason, he also indicated that they are looking for an ideal date to carry out this national front, where they already have the support of doctors, patients and the religious sector of the island, “it is not a protest to go fight, it is a passive protest so that the country’s leaders also understand that for us Puerto Ricans the health is first of all, there is no economic development, there is nothing that can establish a country if there is no health. The health It is the basis of everything, even to be able to educate yourself,” he said.

However, he also added that there will not be a strike in the healthbecause they do not want patients to be harmed, therefore, the school seeks that people who can support the cause do so as long as they are available.
