Protecting the Belgian-Moroccan Community: Uncovering Threats and Ensuring Stability

They are Belgian of Moroccan origin. We meet them in Brussels. One of them has a career in public service. All wish to remain anonymous. They have created associations that they run in the neighborhoods. In this way, they represent the Belgian-Moroccan community within which they have weight.

This is obviously what attracts the attention of certain services – they do not specify which ones – which seek, they say, to monopolize them, monitor them, control them.

The mystery of the missing safes at the bank continues: “I was robbed of 100,000 euros without the slightest trace”

The word “spies” comes up in conversation. They are worried and that is the reason for the meeting: to clarify and alert. These association presidents do not deny their roots and declare that they want to remain loyal to Morocco, but they refuse that some seek to monopolize them and divert the non-profit organizations that they lead towards other objectives and other interests. “We have Moroccan origins but we are not at the service of Morocco. We are, in Belgium, at the service of the Belgian-Moroccan community. We alert to the fact that people and agents are pursuing objectives which represent a threat to security and stability (of the Belgian-Moroccan community).”

This is their message: “When you are someone who matters in the community, you become a target. “Agents” want to force you to follow their way and their ideology and to achieve their goals. You must work for them: either you collaborate, or you’ll be killed. We’re put under pressure.”

They represent multicultural solidarity associations active in various areas of social, educational and religious life. “We face pressure, intimidation, blackmail, even threats.”

“Bad Moroccans”

They identified three women. One of them worked until fairly recently at the Moroccan consulate general in Brussels, from which she was reportedly dismissed, they learned, following suspicions of “embezzlement”.

“One of the practices consists of threatening: Either you collaborate in the direction that we want, or else we will destroy you by tarnishing your image in the community, in the neighborhoods, on social networks and in associative movements.”

Defamation is a technique: to discredit by spreading the rumor that they are bad Moroccans and disloyal to Morocco for supporting positions on a given subject that are contrary to Moroccan interests. “We are independent. For some time now, it has not been easy to resist them. They put pressure and threaten to force us to walk straight. If we balk, they seek to discredit us and isolate us in our community. Today Today, the fact of being born in Belgium or Morocco has become irrelevant. We do not deny our parents or our origins or Morocco but our life is in Belgium and through the associations that we represent, we work for the community Belgian-Moroccan. We are not at the service of Morocco, it is very different.”

Appel

They insist once more and once more on preserving their anonymity. “A question of security,” they say. “There are dangerous people capable of going far. We are monitored and through us, it is the community that they want to put under control and dependence. We ask the Belgian services to be vigilant, to do what it takes to make this stop.”
