Protecting Our Elderly: Tips for Staying Active and Healthy During Winter

During this time of winter, one of the most vulnerable groups are the elderly; inclement weather can isolate them and affect their physical and mental health.

“With the cold, many people want to stay in bed, wrapped up, not get up for fear of the cold, and that is the worst thing you can do,” explained Karen Soulette Cea, therapist at the Center for Elders Independence.

This therapist explains that inactivity will only make things worse.

“The most important thing of all is exercise, and exercise is what helps a lot for people who suffer from arthritis, since we know that when the cold starts, those pains begin,” said Soulette Cea.

Staying active is the key, although the exercises you do should be appropriate for your physical condition.

“We need movement, for the body to warm up inside, to let those muscles start working,” said Soulette Cea.

Delia stated that this does work, she goes to the Center for Elders Independence in Concord where they guide her on what to do.

“Although it is difficult, getting up, walking around the house, doing housework helps, because you are moving and doing exercises, although you don’t realize it,” Delia said.

If not, you can go to a center where they guide you, you can do basic exercises at home like opening and closing your hands, you can also do it with your feet and the same up and down, because what that does is it starts circulation.

You can also use creams, take hot showers and knee pads.
