Protecting Consumers: The Need for a Rapid Warning System for Potentially Harmful Products

From time to time, some kind of frightening and disturbing warnings appear to us regarding some food and therapeutic products, which are known and accessible to everyone at the market level, and are used on a daily and natural basis in our living lives. This continuous type of warning advertisements causes widespread concern among consumers and may harm their health, especially since these products, regarding which such a wide controversy appears, are still available in the market and are consumed in a normal way. Some competent authorities in health education and nutritional control appear, from time to time, to warn once morest this or that product, despite its risks that require quick and more serious dealings, because the warning behavior does not reach the community in an appropriate manner and does not prevent the circulation of these products, and it is not reassuring to stay away from using them, It is not directed to all consumers.
In this regard, Al-Eqtisadiah newspaper recently published a report on the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s announcement that aspartame, one of the most common artificial sweeteners in the world, may be a potential carcinogen, and is commonly used in the manufacture of many products, including low-calorie Coca-Cola soft drinks and chewing gum. Extra and some Sanabel drinks, and that the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives and the International Agency for Research on Cancer will simultaneously assess the risks associated with aspartame. For information, aspartame “E951” is an intense and low-calorie artificial sweetener, which is regarding 200 times sweeter than sugar, and as a result it is often used as a substitute for sugar or to enhance the flavor of foods as a “flavor enhancer”, and it is widely consumed.
In general, this is not the first time that such a warning declaration has been made. Studies and reports have appeared on food, beverages, cosmetics, perfumes, and other products that are carcinogenic or cause serious diseases. For example, the World Health Organization has previously warned that non-sugar sweeteners that are commonly used to control Weight may be associated with long-term health risks, as previously reported that France and the European Union issued a ban on nine products of a Saudi perfume company because they contain substances that cause skin irritation, allergies, endocrine disruption, infertility and cancer, while we did not find any in our markets. Move to ban these fragrances. Human health first, companies either stick to safe products or are sanctioned and face bans.
Here we refer at the local level to the food system issued by Royal Decree No. 1 / M in 1436 AH, in Article Two on the need to protect the consumer from harmful, adulterated, misleading and unfit for consumption, and Article (16) of the same system prohibited the circulation of food if it was harmful to health or adulterated And Article (20) of the system stipulates that if the food establishment knows or “doubts” regarding food, it must withdraw it from circulation immediately and inform the authority, and Article (21) held the authority responsible for establishing a rapid warning system, and in Article (29) imposing the system on the authority Adopting a preventive approach, and Article (30) explicitly stipulates that the authority, if it has reason to believe that food causes a health hazard and there is no conclusive evidence, may take precautionary measures.
In front of all these explicit and clear materials regarding the mere “suspicion” of the existence of a health threat in any food product, and the need to provide a rapid warning system, as well as a clear preventive approach, products such as aspartame (E951), which international health institutions have explicitly warned regarding, are considered a cause Possibly carcinogenic, it is also still being sold openly and publicly, although this is a clear violation of the regulations, as the food establishments learned through the media that there is strong, declared, and potential evidence that this substance is threatening to health, and the first in such a case was to withdraw these products immediately from the shelves until The Food and Drug Authority issues its decision regarding these substances, which has been incomprehensibly delayed until now. The same applies to what was published in the media regarding perfumes that were banned in the European Union or some types of agricultural products, which were declared to have increased levels of toxicity, or were sold during the ban period.
The Food and Drug Authority in the Kingdom has an activity and appears from time to time by warning of this or that product without any other steps, but is it sufficient to warn only? Local newspapers have published regarding the authority warning of locally made perfumes, and it has been circulated to the chambers of commerce. However, these products have been monitored in the markets, which indicates that there are no more effective mechanisms than mere generalization, what are the reasons that limit the implementation of the food system articles, If there are apparent indications and substantial doubts regarding the safety of a particular product, the facilities must immediately take the initiative to prevent it, so that it becomes safe. It is assumed in such cases to create an application such as Tawakkulna, in which establishments that sell or manufacture food are obligated to use it, and through which warning levels regarding materials and mechanisms for dealing with them are raised, and the application holder must confirm commitment immediately, because human health is a priority. And while the regulations issued regarding food provide sufficient support for the authority to practice the best levels of preventive measures for public health, and with the increase in health-threatening products, it is now appropriate to develop a national strategy in which various parties participate in order to achieve the highest possible levels of prevention, and helps the citizen to identify health-threatening products, and forces Establishments to withdraw these products from the shelves until the matter becomes clear, whether by banning them or otherwise. As long as the work of the Food and Drug Authority affects human food and medicine, the nature of its work necessitates movement, not rest.
