After pesticides, following the Asian hornet, beekeepers are faced with a new danger: theft. A beekeeper from Pecq had the unpleasant surprise to discover that all of his hives had completely disappeared. This is a well-known phenomenon in France for several years. So here he comes to us.

Olivier Devos is a beekeeper in Pecq between Tournai and Mouscron. At the end of September, he went to his apiary to care for his bees and prepare for wintering. And there, surprise: no more hives! No more bees! Its eight hives and two hives had vanished.

An astonishing flight

A hive is not like a wallet that you put in your pocket; to transport hives, you have to be equipped, you have to know regarding it, you have to act at night when the bees have returned. Olivier Devos takes us there: “When I arrived I was surprised to discover that all the hives had been removed. The apiary was completely empty! Even the metal hive supports were taken away“, laments Olivier. Of the presence of the apiary, all that remains is a geotextile which covers the ground and an empty bag of bee food, abandoned on site. The trough which served as a water trough for the bees during the periods of drought has also disappeared.

This is a new phenomenon“, we observe at the Val de l’Escaut police zone. “This is the first time that we are dealing with a theft of beehives in our police zone. It is a phenomenon that we discover“admits Commissioner Tom Deldaele.
