The tiger mosquito, with its black and white stripes, is a vector of nuisance and diseases including dengue fever. Since April, France has been placed under heightened surveillance, while the period of activity of the insect extends from May 1 to November 30. All the more worrying since Aedes albopictus – its scientific name – has colonized 71 departments. Arrived by the south of France in 2004, it gradually moved north in less than 20 years, favored by longer and denser episodes of high heat each summer, due to climate change due to human activities.
The tiger mosquito was also the cause of 65 cases of autochthonous dengue, that is to say that the disease was directly contracted in metropolitan France. A figure which should increase in the years to come, while in an opinion published last April, the Covars – ex-scientific council – had warned of an increase in the years to come in cases of dengue fever, Zika and chikungunya, transmitted diseases by “vector” mosquitoes. According to Covars, these viral diseases “might become public health problems in metropolitan France”.
