Protect Yourself from Parcel Delivery Scams: How to Spot and Avoid Fraudulent SMS Messages

Did you receive an SMS message notifying you about an attempted delivery of an item sent by parcel to your home? So, be careful, because this could be an attempt by cybercriminals to steal your banking details.

“2/2 delivery attempts have been made, please confirm your details or your item will be returned,” said the message Violeta received on her phone.

The notification was accompanied by a link to an apocryphal page from Correos de México.

“I just had a package pending delivery and, when the message arrived, it sent me to a page to pay and complete the delivery; it even seemed cheap to me and I didn’t see anything strange until I saw the page, but I had already filled out the format with the data,” he narrated.

Seconds after completing the transaction, the charge to his card of 20 thousand pesos for some plane tickets was recorded. Immediately, Violeta contacted the bank to report the movement and have it cancelled.

“What makes you most angry is that they don’t take away your data, but you give it to them yourself,” he said.

Cybersecurity specialist Hiram Camarillo stressed the importance of being alert when receiving SMS messages in the name of a company. What cybercriminals are looking for, he explained, is to convince the user to voluntarily hand over banking information or even make deposits to other accounts.

Given this, he suggested not clicking on links that one is not sure where they lead to, nor responding to these SMS with personal data.

“The software used by extortionists is not so advanced as to be able to obtain all the user’s information through the link, although this type of technology does exist, it is very advanced and expensive, which is why they are fully committed to convincing people” , he assured.

AVOID FALLING

-When receiving alerts related to a package, contact the courier company directly.

-Look to see if you have a message in your email for said shipment.

-Do not open suspicious or apocryphal links.

-Do not respond to the message with personal or banking information.

-Always check the address of the pages you click on to make sure it is an official domain.

-You can enter the phone number or URL address in an internet search engine to find out about possible previous reports.

-Report the numbers from which suspicious messages come, as well as malicious links.

-Install an antivirus on your devices, both the computer and the cell phone versions.
