Protect your laptop well against hackers: advice from the UFC Que Choisir Tarn

Our smartphones store more and more personal data so coveted by hackers. Protecting your mobile is therefore a priority.

Next-generation phones are true pocket computers. With all their riches, but also their failings… First, you have to know what is stored in the device; the data to be protected being those relating to identity (name, address, Social Security number), contact details (telephone, email address), browsing history (websites visited, searches carried out), photos and videos personal information, message and call history, contacts and address books, geolocation and applications (IDs and passwords)… Locking a mobile phone is essential, with a password, not a too simple four digits! Add letters to it. The biometric key is interesting, but not without flaws. For applications, especially those allowing access to sensitive and personal data, double authentication (2FA) must be activated. We will also remember to use the security options offered by the telephone. Depending on the brand and generation of the device, some, such as encryption or the creation of a secure and invisible space, are extremely practical.

Do not store sensitive information

Some latest models offer encrypted and unreadable containers without a password, or even facial recognition of the phone carrier. Better not store sensitive information (bank account or Social Security numbers) on a phone. Keeping all your photos and videos there without downloading them frequently is also not recommended; it means taking the risk of slowing down the device and losing them in the event of breakage or theft.

A physical solution for storing them, such as an external hard drive placed in a drawer at home, is preferable to a “cloud” service offered by the operator or the telephone manufacturer. Finally, you never connect your mobile to a wifi connection that you do not know. Finally, manage installed applications. Before downloading them, reading their regulations related to the security of personal data is very important. We deactivate the personal data access authorizations of the applications used, when they are not necessary. We regularly update these applications, reading the modifications made before validating them, because some might be more greedy in data collection. For example, you don’t install a video game on your phone, which will have access to text messages, e-mails or the microphone, nor an application that does not display that “data is encrypted during transfer”, and does not explain not how to request their deletion. Finally, we delete the apps that we no longer use!
