Protect Your Home During Halloween: Beware of Candy Collecting Burglars

Still little-known in Belgium at the end of the nineties, the Halloween festival, which arrived straight from the USA, is now well established here. And multiple events are organized for the period. Among these, some can make the work of burglars easier.

This is particularly the case for children’s tours in the neighborhoods. These monsters, ghosts and other witches who come to ring doors looking for candy can, despite themselves, be of particularly valuable help to burglars.

“Thieves can be everywhere, confirms Marleen Coppens, commissioner of the prevention service of the Montgomery police zone, in Brussels. And they can just watch the kids ring the doorbell. If no one opens when the doorbell rings, they will see it. This will not necessarily mean that the inhabitants of the building are absent but it will be another clue for burglars who will then be able to take an interest in the home, come and check it and then burglarize it if they have confirmation that there is nobody.”

Halloween: do you lose weight by watching a horror movie?

It’s obviously difficult to guard against this: when you’re not there, it’s difficult to open the door for the children. “This is why we can simulate our presence (lamp, radio, television, etc.), continues Marleen Coppens. Anything that will deter burglars from taking an interest in your home is worth taking.”
