For a good month now distemper, which was thought to have been eradicated for a long time, has been raging in the Pyrénées-Orientales. The first cases were detected at the Perpignan pound, then in the shelters where stray dogs are collected. THE veterinarians therefore call for the greatest vigilance. There is no treatment once the disease has declared, only a preventive vaccine. We take stock with the veterinarian of France Bleu Roussillon.
No treatment exists
First of all because this viral disease is highly contagious and often fatal when the dogs catch him. There is indeed no treatment. Several symptoms should alert you as Christophe Guitton, veterinarian in Perpignan reminds us: “It’s a dog that has a purulent snot in the nose and eyes, that’s really characteristic. He will also have pimples on his abdomen, tooth enamel that is being destroyed or fever for the first few days Finally, if the evolution is morbid, there will also be neurological signs of the epilepsy type. In these cases the prognosis is very unfavorable.”
Only one solution: vaccinate your dog
The most exposed dogs are the youngest according to the veterinarian. It is therefore necessary to be extra careful and above all to vaccinate your pet : “You must vaccinate the puppy from two months, then at three and four months. You must also avoid exposing your puppy during the first months, as the specialist reminds us: “you must avoid bringing your puppy to pet shops where he might come across other infected dogs.” Finally, if you have an adult dog vaccinated when he was a puppy, it is recommended to return for a booster.
Contacted by the editorial staff of France Bleu Roussillon, the Perpignan pound has not yet responded to our requests.
