AI-powered prosthetic hand wins FEI Innovation Award
This week, the INOVAFEI award ceremony for the 1st semester of 2023 took place, an event by FEI (Fundação Educacional Ignaiana Pe. Sabóia de Medeiros) that recognizes and rewards the most innovative Undergraduate Course Completion Works, developed by students from all courses of the institution. The winning project in the innovation category, the main one of the night, was the Sheikah Arm, by FEI Automation and Control Engineering students. The Sheikah Arm is a prototype myoelectric hand prosthesis developed on a 3D printer.

“The prosthesis we built uses artificial intelligence to detect the movement people want to make. This is something rarely found in the market, we can say that it is a differential of our project. The use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the prosthesis makes the adaptation process faster and the movements more natural with a more independent prosthesis”, highlights Ricardo Matheus, one of the students responsible for the project.
The idea of the prosthesis is that the user’s intention is detected by using machine learning techniques to recognize surface myoelectric signal patterns. For the group, the hand prosthesis is a vital need for society, as it promotes inclusion and quality of life for amputees. In addition to restoring lost skills, it provides autonomy, self-esteem and equal opportunities, ensuring full participation in society.
Other highlights besides the hand prosthesis
In addition to the main prizes, each FEI course had its individual winners. Also on the podium for the innovation award were the project for the application of second-life batteries as a solution to the energy problem, carried out by electrical engineering students and the work of materials engineering students, which addressed the influence of the incorporation of industrial waste from ionomer on the mechanical properties of polypropylene heterophasic copolymer.
In 2023, students brought to INOVAFEI some projects that seek to solve society’s challenges in the areas of health, mobility, renewable energies, logistics and administration, with a focus on innovation and technology aligned with the main trends of each of the institution’s courses.
Traditionally, INOVAFEI takes place every semester and is divided into three stages, the first of which is the exhibition of all FEI Course Completion Works. In the second part, the virtual evaluation takes place and, finally, the award ceremony.
All works that were exhibited by the FEI in the 1st half of 2023 are available for access at event website.
