Books – Sayed Metwally
Prostate cancer describes a dreadful condition that begins in a walnut-sized gland in the pelvis. Just like all cancers, early detection greatly improves the chances of effective treatment.
This makes awareness of the symptoms very important. Fortunately, a warning sign while you are in the bathroom can help detect the disease, according to the British newspaper express.
Symptoms of prostate cancer usually appear once the prostate becomes large enough to affect the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the penis, known as the urethra.
This means that prostate cancer often causes signs when you go to the bathroom. One of the warning signs of the potentially fatal condition is blood in the urine (hematuria).
Hematuria is a medical term that refers to the presence of blood in your urine that can be seen with the naked eye or detected by a urine test.
Although blood in your urine may not be caused by anything serious, it is important to have it checked by a doctor.
Furthermore, research published in the journal ISRN Surgery found that prostate cancer triggered hematuria in 60 percent of patients. The research team looked at 81 men hospitalized with hematuria between 1991 and 2011.
About 41 patients with this warning sign were found to have prostate cancer, and other problems associated with this symptom were bladder cancer or a urinary tract infection.
Fortunately, hematuria isn’t the only sign that can alert you to prostate cancer.
The main symptoms to look for include:
difficulty urinating
Decreased force in the urethra
blood in the urine
blood in semen
Bone pain
Lose weight without trying
Erectile dysfunction
These symptoms should not be ignored, but they do not mean that you have prostate cancer and are more likely to be caused by something else such as an enlarged prostate.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPE for short, describes a condition that can affect how you urinate. It’s common in men over the age of 50 and isn’t usually a serious threat to health. However, you should always get any unusual changes and symptoms checked by your doctor. .
How to prevent prostate cancer
The Mayo Clinic explains that although there is no “sure way” to prevent prostate cancer, with research often giving conflicting advice, doctors tend to recommend a healthy lifestyle.
When it comes to your diet, it is advised to choose a diet that is low in fat and full of fruits and vegetables.
You may also want to consider cutting down on dairy products, as some research papers note that men who eat the most dairy products are at the highest risk of developing prostate cancer.
Other interventions such as exercising and maintaining a healthy weight can also help.
