Every year, if there’s one thing that analysts and scouts really like to do when it comes time to describe certain prospects who will be eligible for the next draft, it’s to find one or more comparable to these prospects among the players of the National Hockey League (usually active).
Sometimes it’s even the prospects themselves who compare themselves to players currently playing in the National Hockey League.
It’s especially during the NHL stunt that these kinds of comparisons are made by the prospects themselves.
This combination is now behind us, we now know the comparables of several hopefuls according to them of course.
One of the comparisons a prospect makes to his own style of play is to defenseman Owen Pickering.
Generally, a defenseman expected to come out late in the first round or early in the second round like Pickering would tend to compare himself to the elite defensemen of this world.
Often, prospects will explain that guys like Charlie McAvoy on the defensive end and Cale Makar on the offensive end are their role models.
However, it is not these players who inspire Pickering’s game at all.
Indeed, Owen Pickering explained that he wanted to defend like Joel Edmundson. Yes yes LE Joel Edmundson of the Montreal Canadiens.
In the notebook of this last day of the evaluation camp:

Edmundson’s name is certainly not one of the most heard names during an NHL evaluation camp.
However, listening to Pickering’s words and thinking a little, it is true that defensively, Edmundson is very solid, especially since his arrival in Montreal.
“I try to play like Miro HeiskanenMiro Heiskanen, it is quite good. And I wanna defend like Joel EdmundsonJoel Edmundson. » – Owen Pickering
Pickering then went into a little more detail regarding what he enjoys and what he tries to replicate from Edmundson’s game.
“The way to defend [d’Edmundson] is underestimated. He has a physical element that I want to develop. He is good at drawing opponents into tight spots and shutting down play, stopping puck flow. –Owen Pickering
From his height of six feet five inches and 179 pounds, one can understand why Pickering is inspired by a player like Edmundson.
The Swift Current Broncos defenseman in the WHL has amassed 33 points (nine goals – 24 assists) in 62 games this season.
There’s also Russian defenseman Pavel Mintyukov who named a Habs player as a player he’s inspired by.
Indeed, the Spirit de Saginaw defender in the OHL said he really appreciated Alexander Romanov’s style of play.
Note that the two Russian defenders have the same agent.
Mintyukov is another defender who might come out early enough in the next draft.
