Prosecutors allege that Mascia shot himself in the leg at Hempstead Lake State park, concealed the weapon, and than drove to the Southern State Parkway, where he called for help, claiming he had been wounded by an unknown gunman.
Mascia’s dramatic story, which gripped the attention of the public and prompted a days-long manhunt, unraveled when authorities uncovered evidence suggesting he had staged the entire incident.
“He knew the fear that it would create, and he did it anyway,” stated Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly, condemning Mascia’s actions as “an unconscionable deception.”
mascia faces charges of official misconduct, tampering with evidence, and falsifying documents.His parents,Dorothy and Thomas,also found themselves implicated in the case,facing charges of criminal possession of a firearm. The .22-caliber gun used in the alleged incident was reportedly discovered in their West hempstead bedroom.
Mascia, who resigned from the State Police on friday, was suspended without pay in November when the inquiry began. He had been a trooper since 2019.
