Prosecutor: the court did not pay attention to the seriousness of the crime in the case of V. Šiliauskas

“We believe that the Kaunas District Court imposed an overly lenient type of punishment and then its amount, reducing the punishment twice. We think that it is unjustified,” V. Alekna, prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Department of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office, told BNS on Monday.

He noted that in the complaint he is asking for the same punishment as during the closing speeches in the Kaunas District Court. The prosecutor proposed to allocate 30 thousand to V.Šiliauskas. EUR fine and six years of imprisonment.

On November 6, the Kaunas District Court awarded V.Šiliauskas 70,000 for corruption crimes. euro fine. Including the time spent in detention for V. Šiliauskas, he should be paid 65,000. euros.

The court stated in its verdict that this would not be a fair punishment for a married, working, child-bearing person who has not been convicted before and does not pose a danger to society.

At that time, V. Šiliauskas’ lawyer Ruslanas Boiko told BNS that he has not yet decided on the appeal.

“We’ll see, we need to adjust that question, we’ll see. I’m surprised,” the lawyer told BNS, commenting on the prosecutor’s complaint.

V. Šiliauskas was convicted for having directly demanded and accepted bribes from the head of “Autokaustas” Juoz Kriaučiūnas in 2021-2022, the total amount of which is 260 thousand. euros. This money will be confiscated from him.

The convicted person is prohibited from working in the public service for seven years – this is the maximum term for such a measure of criminal impact.

According to Kaunas District Court Judge Audrias Meilutis, the fact that a pre-trial investigation into systemic corruption in the Kaunas City Municipality was launched on the basis of his detailed testimony was taken into consideration when imposing the sentence.

The pre-trial investigation, which began in the spring of 2022, was organized and controlled by the prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Department of the General Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation was conducted by officers of the Central Investigation Board of the Special Investigation Service (STT).
