International Observer from Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) Faris Al-Fadhat said that consideration of the proposed arms embargo once morest Israel was a good and progressive step from the UN Human Rights Council.

“This is the first time the UN Human Rights Council has issued or proposed a policy regarding the Israel-Hamas war. We can view this as a step forward from the UN Human Rights Council,” said Faris when contacted by Media Indonesia Friday (5/4).

The Deputy Chancellor for Student Affairs, Alumni and Al Islam Kemuhammadiyahan UMY, added that the Human Rights Council had seriously highlighted the humanitarian impact of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, Palestine.

“This is indeed surprising, increasing the world’s response to their concerns in Gaza. Especially Muslim countries, although this resolution is also supported by Latin American countries,” he said.

He really appreciated this proposal because it would strengthen the world’s efforts to see that Israel’s actions had a big impact on the people of Gaza, Palestine.

“This includes human rights violations, and has also been proposed by African countries at the International Court of Justice,” he said.

On the other hand, President Joe Biden is also overwhelmed by Israel’s actions in Gaza. Moreover, US calls are often ignored by Israel.

“That’s why yesterday Biden asked Israel to firmly pay attention to the condition of civilians in Gaza. So what the OIC is doing to pressure Israel with an arms embargo is a good step,” he said.

However, whether the resolution is successful or not is the next issue. Although, he is pessimistic regarding the compliance of Israel’s allied countries.

“I personally am not sure that the results of this resolution will be adhered to, whether the countries supplying weapons to Israel will stop their activities, whether they will have great power or not, whether these countries will obey,” he concluded. (Fer/Z-7)
