Proportional Election Results in Guadeloupe: GUSR Takes the Lead with Two Senators

The electors of Guadeloupe have therefore chosen, they are once once more sending two men and a woman to represent the Archipelago in the Senate. Unlike the previous senatorial election where the socialists were able to elect two of the three senators, this time it is the GUSR which wins the proportional election with two senators out of the three to be elected.

It is not always easy to understand the game of proportional representation which, for an election like the one held this Sunday in Basse-Terre, can create surprises following the vote count.
Surprises for the general public but not for the political parties since in this game, they can position themselves to win or to lose.

Thus, if the unity of the socialist camp had allowed them to secure victory during the previous election, this year, the socialist party might only count on its natural supports. The discord with Victoire Jasmin, the presence of Jocelyn Sapotille and the two elected officials from Abymes worked once morest the interests of the federation.

Opposite, the GUSR, which had only one seat during the election of September 24, 2017, arrived united and strong from all these recent electoral conquests, it was almost assured of its favorable position for this 2023 election.

In fact, the list of outgoing senator Dominique Théophile received 295 votes while that of Victorin Lurel only had 178 votes. Behind the list of Fabert Michely collects 121 votes. It remained to be seen who would get the third seat. This is why the proportional mechanism which grants a bonus to the list which has had the highest average, worked in favor of the GUSR, allowing it to elect the second on Dominique Théophile’s list, Solange Nadille.

The law on parity has this time once more allowed a woman to be present among the elected officials that Guadeloupe has chosen as senator.
Solange Nadille, who was until then deputy mayor of Terre-de-Bas, will therefore be the first elected official from Terre de Bas to sit in the Senate.
