Joint, muscle and bone injuries are the first, second and third causes of injury that affect soccer players and other team athletes on the field, said Dr. Ismael Castillo Acosta, field doctor for Club de Fútbol Monterrey of the Liga MX.
Preventive measures include a good diet and proper warm-up before entering the field, added the doctor, who has been a member of the team for ten years.
Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are one of the most common injuries in this type of sport, followed by muscle and bone injuries, such as fractures.
Yesterday, Dr. Ismael Castillo participated in the opening day of the Congress of Orthopedics and Traumatology, which will take place until the day after tomorrow at the International Congress Center, convened by the Mexican Association of Reconstructive, Articular and Arthroscopy Surgery, AC. The event brings together specialists from different entities.
During his presentation, he stressed that injuries are multifactorial: there are direct and indirect causes. “The direct causes are due to a blow, such as a ‘tackle’, or a direct impact against the body of another player.”
Indirect injuries occur while footballers are running. “When they accelerate, they lengthen their stride and sometimes footballers do not warm up,” he warned.
Ligament injuries are multifactorial. “Knee injuries can occur directly, such as from a blow, a rotation or a twist; they can also occur when jumping and landing in the wrong position.”
“Injuries of this type can keep a footballer out of action. What we try to do is ensure that the athlete has an accurate diagnosis so that there is a correct rehabilitation process and that he does not miss days of competition.”
He considered it very important to provide adequate treatment and an accurate prognosis so that the athlete can have a very efficient resolution of his problem or injury.
The field doctor and sports injury rehabilitation specialist recalled that football is the most widely played sport in the world, and in order not to damage muscles and joints it is important to have a good diet, rest, preparation and do at least a proper warm-up of 15 to 20 minutes before entering the field.
He called for adequate preparation to avoid injuries that could even cause work incapacity.
Castillo Acosta said it is vital that football leagues and sports tournaments have medical services, not to prescribe pills or home remedies for an injury and not to self-medicate. “You have to go and receive medical attention as soon as possible.”— CLAUDIA IVONNE SIERRA MEDINA
