Lee Jeong-min, chairman of the steering committee of the Confucian Association, said, “We are grateful and thankful to those who worked hard for a year to pass the special law. However, we are not entirely happy. We had to watch the National Assembly ignore the bereaved families once once more.”
He continued, “The ruling party urged us to give up many things throughout the negotiations, and we were prepared to sacrifice as long as we might reach an agreement while giving them as much as they wanted. However, in the final negotiations, they gave up the position of chairman, which is the key to forming the special committee.” “What was even more infuriating was that the ruling party members all left the plenary session when the bill was being reviewed,” he said.
Chairman Lee said, “We have fought hard for a year, and the children desperately want to reveal their injustice,” and added, “I hope that the president will not trample on this earnest wish by exercising his veto.”
Attorney Bok-nam Yoon, head of the Itaewon disaster task force at Minbyun, said, “Although it was not passed by agreement between the ruling and opposition parties, the amendments made at this plenary session reflected all the important demands of the ruling party,” and added, “Please do not ask us to exercise our right to veto.”
He added, “Identifying the truth of the tragedy and preventing a recurrence is not just the job of the bereaved families or the opposition party,” adding, “We ask you not to delay uncovering the truth any longer and not to further hurt the sorrow of those who died.”
The bereaved families chanted slogans such as “President Yoon Seok-yeol should immediately promulgate a special law to uncover the truth regarding the Itaewon disaster” and “The government should immediately cooperate with the establishment of a special investigation committee” and then moved to a joint memorial altar at City Hall Square.
Previously, the National Assembly held a plenary session this followingnoon and passed the ‘Special Act to Guarantee the Rights of Victims of the 10.29 Itaewon Disaster, Find the Truth, and Prevent Reoccurrence’ (Itaewon Disaster Special Act), which was submitted at the request of the Democratic Party of Korea.
Only opposition party members, including the Democratic Party, participated in the vote, and the People Power Party did not participate in the vote in protest of the opposition party’s forced processing.
