NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — Amid the recent spate of military coups that have occurred mainly in Africa, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday stressed the importance of establishing sustained democratic governance by the rule of law.
Wednesday’s military coup in Gabon came following those in Niger last month, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Chad, Guinea, Sudan and Mali in previous years.
The military takeover of Gabon was announced shortly following electoral authorities said President Ali Bongo Ondimba had won a new term, despite allegations of electoral irregularities.
During a press briefing at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Guterres said: “Many countries face deep-seated governance problems. But military governments are not the solution.”
“They make problems worse. They can’t solve a crisis, they can only make it worse,” he added.
The UN chief called on nations to act quickly to build trustworthy democratic systems and uphold the rule of law.
Mr. Guterres stressed the need to empower international organizations such as the African Union to play a central role in promoting peace, democratic stability and governance in Africa. END
