Promoting Safe and Supportive Academic Environments for Healthcare Students: The Importance of Teaching Excellence and Continuous Improvement

A few weeks ago, a shocking story shed light on a little-known reality beyond the reach of those of us who work in health. a university student, in the midst of a professional occupational therapy practice, was affected by adverse conditions that jeopardized her physical and emotional well-being. This dramatic situation reminds us of the vulnerability our students are exposed to during their academic practices, where stress and pressure can become an overwhelming burden. As healthcare institutions, we must be committed to constantly reformulating and raising standards, to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students on their path to professional training.

In case of Telethon, this is what we have done with a teaching model that exceeds the limits of the purely technical. Beyond specific learning outcomes, this approach focuses on safeguarding the teaching process in an environment of quality and warmth, where each student feels valued and supported. Being founded on respect and the humanization of learning, the model promotes an empathetic relationship between teachers and students, and cultivates not only knowledge, but also values of solidarity and mutual understanding.

In the field of teaching, the commitment to the comprehensive development of students and the constant improvement of the teaching staff makes evaluation necessary as a continuous and fundamental practice to guarantee pedagogical excellence. This is how we started using since 2020 ACLEEM surveyan invaluable tool which not only assesses the students’ perception of the educational environment, but which also provides a detailed view of key aspects such as teaching quality and capacity, healthcare professionals’ willingness to help, the feedback given, the feeling of being heard and, last but not least, the role to the professional role model.

The teaching-learning process is inherently two-way, and allows both teachers and students to feed each other’s knowledge, perceptions, experiences and visions. Recognizing the importance of this dynamic exchange is essential to enrich educational practice, adapting it to the changing needs and realities of new generations.

By encouraging open and respectful dialogue, a collaborative learning environment is created that promotes personal and professional growth for both teachers and students, thereby promoting the comprehensive development of the educational community. Healthcare institutions are in the moment to reflect and act in a way that is consistent with their mission and promote responsible teaching-learning processes.
