Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul announced on the 10th that it is encouraging pneumococcal vaccination in celebration of ‘World Pneumonia Day’ on the 12th.
Every year, November 12th is ‘World Pneumonia Day’, a day established in 2009 by the Global Coalition for Pneumonia in Children with the goal of increasing understanding and awareness of pneumonia and promoting activities for the treatment of pneumonia.
Pneumonia is an acute inflammatory respiratory disease caused by infection with microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The most common symptoms that may indicate pneumonia are fever, cough, and phlegm, similar to a cold. As symptoms worsen, systemic symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, muscle pain, and difficulty breathing may appear.
Pneumococci are the main cause of pneumonia and cause invasive infections such as acute otitis media, pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. In particular, the incidence is high and fatal in infants, children, and the elderly over 65 years old, so more caution is needed.
The World Health Organization (WHO) selected pneumonia as one of the diseases that can be prevented by vaccines.
Pneumococcal vaccine is a protein-conjugate vaccine administered three times as a basic dose at 2, 4, and 6 months of age, and an additional dose is administered at 12 to 15 months of age, and a polysaccharide vaccine is administered once at age 65 or older, for a total of 4 to 5 doses in a lifetime. This is recommended. The type and timing of pneumococcal vaccine may vary depending on the patient’s health status and vaccination history.
Eunpyeong-gu supports residents to get vaccinated without cost through 59 entrusted medical institutions for national vaccination for children and 179 entrusted medical institutions for national pneumococcal vaccination for the elderly.
Information on consignment medical institutions can be found on the Vaccination Assistant website or the Eunpyeong-gu Public Health Center website. For further information, please contact the Eunpyeong-gu Public Health Center Vaccination Department.
Eunpyeong-gu Mayor Kim Mi-kyung said, “Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infectious diseases,” and added, “I hope that the pneumonia vaccination will help you live a healthy life.”
