Every September 21, the International Day of Peace is celebrated worldwide, by decision of the United Nations General Assembly, which declared this day as a date dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace, as a universal value and also carrying out actions concrete measures such as truces or respect for 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire. Our planet needs world peace more than ever.
This year the theme proposed by the United Nations is “Actions for peace: our ambition for global objectives.” This motto is a call to action that recognizes the individual and collective responsibility of the right and duty to promote peace on the globe.
Peace is considered a Human Right of which all people and groups are entitled: we all have the right to live in peace, we all have the right to a just, sustainable and lasting peace. Peace is not only the absence of armed conflicts, internal or foreign, it is also the recognition of the other, respecting their differences, whether due to sex, gender, political ideals, religious beliefs, among other differences.
The Ombudsman’s Office, through its main spokesperson, Alfredo Ruiz, joins this commemoration and expresses that: “peace is a supreme value and without it the exercise of Human Rights is difficult.” Peace is essential for respect for life, its construction is the most precious asset of humanity, and it must be seen as a behavior or attitude toward life. This day is also an opportunity for a deep reflection by everyone on the principles of respect, justice and solidarity in these times.
The highest representative of the National Human Rights Institution also indicated that in Venezuela peace represents a principle, a culture and an unbreakable value, being in healthy social coexistence is always the objective, for the integral development of all humanity, of all people; That is why the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in its article 3 establishes that: “The State has as essential purposes the defense and development of the person and respect for their dignity, the democratic exercise of the popular will and the construction of a just and peace-loving society” (…).
Ruiz highlighted that the Venezuelan State has designed a series of legal instruments to eradicate discrimination and violence in the country, among which he mentioned the Constitutional Law Against Hate, for Peaceful Coexistence and Tolerance; Organic Law once morest Racial Discrimination and the Organic Law on the Right of Women to a Life Free of Violence, among others. The Ombudsman added that sowing the meaning of comprehensive peace, respect for other people and conflict resolution begins with the youngest members of the house, because along with children and adolescents, families They educate in values such as generosity, friendship, solidarity and tolerance that are fundamental pillars for building emotional relationships and coexistence with the world and with others.
