On the occasion of International Students’ Day, which is celebrated on November 17, the Foundation for Social Protection of the Collegiate Medical Organization (FPSOMC) highlights its commitment to the promotion, prevention and protection of mental health for the future of the profession medical.

Numerous studies show how the medical profession is subjected, both when accessing the degree of Medicine studies and during the degree, and subsequently at the beginning of clinical practice, to high levels of demand and stress that can seriously affect regarding your mental health.

In addition to these factors, their own psychobiological vulnerability and other general conflicts typical of age are added. Raising awareness among medical students from the faculties themselves has always been an objective of the FPSOMC as an essential tool to detect and correct the psychosocial risks of the profession.

“The awareness and training of students and academic leaders is essential to identify the sources of psychological discomfort during the training period and instill the responsibility of self-care for healthy medical practice,” says Dr. Tomás Cobo, president of the FPSOMC.

Medical faculties, student organizations and medical colleges play an essential role in this aspect. “We all have to work together to detect risk patterns for mental problems from the early stages and have healthy medical professionals in the future.”

Some professionals “who guarantee safe and quality healthcare,” says Dr. M.ª. Isabel Moya, first vice president of the FPSOMC. And 41% of medical students already have symptoms of depression and 11% have suicidal ideation.

These are data from the Depression, Burnout, Anxiety and Empathy (DABE) Study of Medical Students. This is where the foundation of the medical profession plays a fundamental role through programs and aid that ensure the mental health of the doctor from his Bachelor’s training to his Resident stage.

The Foundation for the Social Protection of the Collegiate Medical Organization (FPSOMC), the State Council of Medical Students (CEEM), the Medical Mutual Foundation (FMM) and the Galatea Foundation have established an alliance to protect the future of the profession.

This alliance has materialized in the Telematic Service for Psychological Support for Medical Students (SAPEM) so that future doctors can develop their profession in the best personal health conditions and with the maximum guarantees for their patients.

This initiative, which arose within the medical profession, was born to address and respond to a specific problem faced by students of the degree in Medicine: mental disorders and emotional discomfort related to the activities of the training period.

The SAPEM provides psycho-emotional care to medical students in Spain who voluntarily request professional help through a telematic platform, by videoconference or by telephone, with mental health professionals and in a completely confidential manner.

Under the motto “Self-care, the pending subject of your training, #StartForYou” the FPSOMC, FMM and CEEM reinforce the SAPEM dissemination campaign with the aim of reaching more medical students and creating the necessary awareness of self-care from the first contacts with medicine.

Students who need it can write to the WhatsApp number enabled by the FPSOMC 669 438 903 and, following filling out a completely confidential online form, they will be contacted by mental health professionals from the Galatea Foundation quickly and briefly at the telephone number provided by the plaintiff.

Since the WhatsApp number was enabled to request the service, hundreds of students have contacted SAPEM and this psycho-emotional support service. According to the first disaggregated data, 84% of the students served by this service are women.

From the medical profession, a further step is taken with the initiative of seminars in the faculties to raise awareness regarding the importance of taking care of one’s own health and to address the risky behaviors and habits that they already present and the psychosocial risks of studying the career of Medicine and doctor’s practice.
