and the University of British Columbia investigated the possible relationship between the presence of meaning in life and psychological distress among men.

This study of 364 male participants found that those who reported feeling more meaning in their lives were less likely to experience general psychological distress including symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The study went further by investigating two main factors at play: resilience and loneliness.
By examining these two factors, the study concluded that a greater sense of purpose and meaning in life not only directly contributes to reducing psychological distress, but also works to enhance resilience and reduce feelings of loneliness.

These findings suggest that designing and implementing psychotherapeutic interventions to promote meaning and purpose in men’s lives can enhance their resilience, combat loneliness, and ultimately reduce psychological distress.
“Greater attention must be paid to existential states of meaning and meaninglessness to support and improve men’s mental health,” says Tyler Brown, a fellow in the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University and lead author of the study.
