The organization Doctors without borders (MSF) works with the Ministry of Health to promote humanized childbirthto ensure that have a safe, respectful and empowering birth.
According to a press release, this work is carried out in health centers such as the Jesus of Nazareth Popular Cliniclocated in the Sotillo Municipality of the Anzoátegui state.
“We try to ensure that our entire team promotes the norms and practices of humanized childbirth, to improve the quality of care for the patients we receive every day,” explains Yirlendy Salazar, coordinator of the maternal department of this health center.
Humanized childbirth is the practice that allows women to have precise information regarding the process, to decide how they want it to develop, and to receive the quality medical care with which they can give birth safely and with dignity.
However, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO)every day 830 women die from preventable complications related to pregnancy or childbirth.
In the case of Venezuela, the country faces serious economic and social challenges that affect access to health services. In Anzoátegui the health system has been impacted by this reality.
“I felt heard and respected”
Roxana, 24, arrived at the hospital’s maternity services area at 9:00 in the morning. I was already 40 weeks pregnantcontractions and expectations regarding where and in what conditions you would give birth,
The doctor on duty examined the young woman and confirmed that she was four centimeters dilated, I was already in labor.
At that moment, the doctor calmed Roxana’s nerves, welcomed her to the hospital and explained that her delivery would be treated respectfully at all times. That included being informed regarding the process and being able to have the company of someone close.
Roxana asked her mother to come in., Rosa Angélica, who did not understand very well what was happening. It was her first grandchild, plus she was nervous. She hadn’t heard that mothers might accompany her daughters at the time of giving birth either.
Mrs. Rosa Angélica was there at all times. He caressed her hands, kissed her forehead and breathed with her in each of her contractions. This is what respectful childbirth is all regarding.
When Roxana heard her little boy crying for the first time, she burst into tears. Her mother too. The newborn, Nathanael, was taken to his mother’s breast to ensure early attachment.
“I felt heard and respected”said Roxana regarding the process. “It was a very special moment for me, I felt that I was in good hands,” she added.
