“We really need to do something to improve our children’s level of Dutch. This is why childcare is so important. What are we going to do if more and more children don’t hear Dutch during the first three years of their life?”, underlined Mr. Rousseau, denouncing the underfunding of this sector and of education for years.
According to him, the N-VA seems to be the logical partner to govern Flanders, even if there are other options. “I have been in contact with (the president of the Flemish nationalists) Bart De Wever in recent months, but it is not as if we call each other every day,” the president clarified. “The N-VA, the Open Vld, the CD&V or the Greens: as long as the cat catches the mice,” he underlined.

Mr. Rousseau announced that he would be head of the list for the elections on June 9 in Flanders, while the current Minister of Health, Frank Vandenbroucke, will be at the federal level.
At the federal level, Vooruit is, according to Mr. Rousseau, open to an adaptation of state structures after the elections, if this comes close to the party’s objectives. “I am not embarking on a community carousel to bring more things to Flanders which could then destroy Flanders. State reform can be a way. Our aim is to strengthen the welfare state, to redistribute more and to ensure that ordinary citizens have more opportunities again,” he argued.
Mr. Rousseau did not rule out the renewal of the Vivaldi coalition, as long as this best serves the objectives of Vooruit.
