Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in Decision-Making: The Need for Representation

2023-10-01 23:00:00

Have you seen images of the press conference for the Northvolt mega-factory project in the last few days? The lack of diversity was glaring.

Friday, I saw a photo by photographer Pierre-Paul Poulin, on the website of Journal. In the image we see from left to right the co-founder of Northvolt, Paolo Cerruti, the Minister of Economy and Innovation of Quebec, Pierre Fitzgibbon, the Prime Minister of Quebec, François Legault, Justin Trudeau, Minister François -Philippe Champagne and finally the CEO of the Northvolt company, Peter Carlsson.

As François Legault said, this battery cell mega-factory represents the largest manufacturing investment in the entire history of Quebec.

I am discouraged by the fact that, during this press conference, it was white and male decision-makers who were put forward.

Everyone’s money

The federal and provincial governments are funding Northvolt to the tune of $3 billion for the construction of the mega-factory. More than 4.5 billion dollars will also be granted by our governments to the Swedish company for production.

Would women and people of color have decided to allocate these public funds differently? We won’t know.

But what I know is that in 2023, we can no longer consider this lack of diversity to be normal in such important moments for our History.

For better representation

I find it hard to imagine that a person in 2023 would not feel uncomfortable when they see a panel of decision-makers without any diversity.

Just because it’s been like this for a very long time doesn’t mean it’s normal.

I find it important to underline the aberrant nature of the lack of diversity, a question of moving towards avenues for better representation of all the people in our society.
