Promoting Diplomacy and Dialogue: A Path to Ending Military Coups in Africa

2023-08-16 05:43:40

Difficult to know which side to side with: diplomacy or war action? The best thing is to favor dialogue if the junta adheres to it and it would be desirable for it to adhere to it. Failing that, if it is necessary to act, act by making three blows at once: liberate Mali, Faso, Guinea Conakry at the same time! It would be fairer, more equitable and more… economical!

But dialogue is the wisest, most consensual way.

The truth is that ECOWAS got there late, very late, watching all its military coups take place! The African Union as well! A mess and an incompetence without name!

Why would Niger, immediately, be the only one to be liberated and not the others, all the others? Complex, difficult to understand! Why suddenly all this haste and need to liberate Africa from military coups? Yet this is the good reflex but it seems to come a little late! Yes, it is only time to stop the military appetites in Africa but it is also only time for the civil powers to put a stop to their appetite for power and wealth!

If the Nigerien soldiers set an example by returning to the military camps and letting the choice of the people prevail, we will have won with the return of civilians! If ECOWAS succeeds in its action to regain power by force without sacrificing either Bazoum or the Nigerien people, or a youth erected as a rampart, so much the better! She will have won and made up for her insufficiency and her incompetence noted by all!

The main thing for ECOWAS is to avoid the failure of the reconquest of power by force! It would be another real disaster, the consequences of which no one knows! That ECOWAS measures all the risks of its military intervention. Let the putschists measure all the risks of their senseless and proud refusal to reject dialogue!

The rant of my President, President Macky Sall, is undoubtedly part of a vision, a very long vision, that now is the time to free Africa from military coups. Some may say but why does he only think it now with such annoyance? Everything has its time! His recent visit to Putin and his bittersweet exchange with the current putschist President of Burkina Faso must have convinced him to defeat evil, that is to say to stop accessing power by force!

Let’s pray? Haven’t we prayed too much?

Let us rather act to find the best, most humane, most effective and most useful way out for Niger and its people. It is time for the cradle of humanity, our Africa so beautiful and so ardent, to be the sun of the heart!
