Biodiversity is maintained, even in protected areas. In Bérismenil, in the town of La Roche, Natagora volunteers mobilize in a protected area where particularly rare orchids grow. The chainsaw hums. Willows and birches are cut flush. The objective: to create light and space so that the lower plants can flourish.
“The orchids present here require very special conditions to bloom between the end of May and the beginning of June. Our work will help promote their development. But we work for all the ecosystems of the places. Threatened butterflies are present in this area thanks to the diverse flora“, confides Harry Mardulyn, President of the Natagora Eastern Ardenne regional.
A real virtuous circle has been created for fifteen years on the spot. “Today, orchids can be found in the surrounding areas. Respect for nature allows these plants to reproduce. We feel that the ecosystem is recovering. It is complex, we do not control all its elements, but nature is regaining its balance. That is good news !“
Good news that reminds us that working to save a few orchids also means working to restore our environment. “If we don’t respect the environment around us and biodiversity collapses, we too will disappear. And perhaps faster than we think. That’s why this initiative takes everything its meaning. The orchid is an umbrella under which many other species shelter. Without our action, the richness of the place would be much less”, concludes Harry Mardulyn.
