The representative for the Ñuble Region, Marta Bravo (UDI), presented this week – as she had announced – a bill to reduce the number of parliamentarians from 155 to 120, thus returning to what existed until the year 2015, before former President Michelle Bachelet proposed reforming the system.

The union parliamentarian recalled the results of the Cadem survey of March 31, where Chileans not only evaluated the political system with a score of 3.1, but – in addition – 83% said they agreed with reducing the number of legislators.

But in addition, the representative of District 19 argued that the reforms that were made since 2015 “did not fulfill the promise of improving politics in our country”, resulting – for example – in candidates with less than a thousand votes (0 .24%) were elected as deputies, thus encouraging the so-called “discollusion”, which ultimately hinders any possibility of agreement.

“A reform of the political system is absolutely unavoidable. There is no doubt that the current regime we have in our country is going through a serious and profound crisis, affecting both governability and also the credibility of the system. Unfortunately, and as was warned at the time, the reforms that were promoted in 2015 did not fulfill the promise of improving politics and guaranteeing greater representation. On the contrary, they ended up fragmenting Congress, making any type of understanding unfeasible,” questioned Marta Bravo.

For this reason, the parliamentarian for Ñuble called on the Government to commit to said reform, ensuring that “it can perfectly be processed in parallel to the other bills we have”, insisting that “it is essential that we establish new barriers to entry and lower the number of legislators, because it has been demonstrated that having increased from 120 to 155 deputies did not mean greater representation and only ended up polarizing the system.”

But in addition, Bravo recalled that in January of this year, the UDI Deputies’ Caucus presented another reform related to the political system, which requires political parties to obtain at least 5% of the votes at the national level to enter and be part of Congress, unless they have obtained eight or more parliamentarians throughout the country. Likewise, it establishes the cessation of office for all parliamentarians who decide to resign from the community for which they were elected.
