Amazon’s first two satellite prototypes were launched earlier this month. For those who don’t know, the initiative is part of the company’s Project Kuiper and according to the most recent information, both equipment is working normally.
That said, the company recently stated that both items are working correctly. She even released a press release, in which the project’s vice president of technology commented:
There is still a lot of work to do, but at this point in the mission I am excited to report that KuiperSat-1 and KuiperSat-2 are nominally operating. The two satellites are stable in orbit, collecting energy from the Sun and communicating through all links from Earth to space and from space to Earth. At this moment, the satellite prototypes are not only operating without problems, but connection tests have begun. The equipment is being called KuiperSat-1 e KuiperSat-2 and in addition, testing of ground stations and customer antennas has begun.
Amazon also states that the evaluations will last a few months and will enable the collection of useful data about the devices involved in the initiative. In this regard, the next steps include starting to test the entire network through Amazon Web Services, as well as a gateway antenna for satellites and customer antennas.
Project Kuiper will begin mass production of satellites this year in Kirkland, Washington. To improve manufacturing, data collected by prototypes in orbit will be used and the first operational models are expected to be launched in the first half of 2024.
