The conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation published a little over a year ago Project 2025. It is a thick book of 900 pages – which is a kind of government program for Donald Trump if he wins this year’s election.
The publishers themselves write: The book offers a menu of political proposals that will meet our country’s biggest challenges and get the United States back on track.
The Democrats are using the far-reaching proposals in Project 2025 as horror examples of what Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump might do if he gets another term in the White House.
Trump’s campaign, for its part, has actively tried to distance itself from Project 2025, even though many of the points in the program are close to Trump’s own vision of, among other things, reducing the federal bureaucracy and dismantling federal agencies.
100 conservative groups
At least 100 conservative groups have helped shape the proposals, which aim to promote conservative politics with radical means.
Several of the architects behind Project 2025 come from Trump’s previous administration, and leaders of the Heritage Foundation are said to have briefed Trump’s team on the project.
Former Trump administration officials who worked on the project have said they wanted to avoid the mistakes of Trump’s first term by ensuring he is ready this time with both personnel and policy.
By changing the state apparatus, it will be easier to carry out the president’s political program. The idea is central to the conservative vision of dismantling the so-called “deep state”, which they believe blocked Trump’s priorities when he was in power.
In the proposal, it will be easier to fire federal employees. The program also contains measures to strengthen the family, secure individual freedom and protect the country’s borders. The diversity, equality and inclusion program in the Ministry of Defense is proposed to be abolished.
180-day action plan
There must also be a 180-day action plan for what a president can do from day one. This action plan has not yet been published.
– There is really a need to be ready from day one, said Paul Dans, director of Project 2025, in an interview with the news agency AP in 2023.
The Heritage Foundation has built the concept for the book on an earlier edition from the period of former President Ronald Reagan. It was called “Mandate for Leadership.” This book was said to be so popular in the White House that copies were placed on desks to guide the President.
The Heritage Foundation’s president, Kevin Roberts, recently took over leadership of the project. He has promised to continue the fight for the project.
The Democrats warned early
President Joe Biden’s campaign was early on to warn against Project 2025, including through posts on social media.
The Democrats in the House of Representatives have created their own Project 2025 Task Force to focus the spotlight on the dangers of the project.
After Biden’s poor performance in the debate with Trump in June, attention to Project 2025 took off in social media.
It was not so much what was said during the presidential debate, but what was not said: Biden barely mentioned Project 2025, which disappointed the Democrats. They posted on X (formerly Twitter) about Project 2025, a post that got about 20 million views, according to the Democratic campaign.
Countless young Tiktok users have also explained what threat they believe the project poses to civil rights. These videos have received a lot of attention
The Trump camp will downplay the project
Trump’s campaign has thus never embraced Project 2025. Trump’s campaign team has also repeatedly warned the Heritage Foundation against portraying it as part of Trump’s campaign, which has presented its own project.
Trump has also criticized the project. – I know nothing about Project 2025. I have no idea who is behind it. I disagree with some of the things they say, and some of the things they say are absolutely ridiculous and disgusting, he wrote in his social platform.
For their part, the Democrats point out that many of the Republican representatives in the House of Representatives already follow many of the guidelines in Project 2025.
– Republican representatives are actually already pursuing policies that are part of Project 2025, claims Danny Turkel, spokesman for House Accountability War Room an organization that aims to hold Republican representatives accountable for their actions, and in particular their support for Project 2025.
– They have already taken these proposals into Congress, he points out.
Fabricated charges
The House Republican Campaign Committee claims that the attacks are fabricated by Democrats to shift attention away from their own policies.
– The attacks are a “desperate lie” that comes from the fact that the Democrats in the House of Representatives see that the opportunities to regain the majority are dwindling, says Will Reinert, press secretary for the National Republican Congressional Committee.
