Dubai/Mumbai ∙ Officials have released a list of items that can be brought when traveling by air from India to UAE. The move comes as the India-UAE air corridor is one of the busiest routes as a large number of Indians travel to the Gulf for business, tourism and employment purposes, and the influx of visitors is likely to increase significantly as the festive season approaches. Check-in baggage rejections at Mumbai International Airport have increased due to domestic and international passengers carrying prohibited items.

∙ Up to copra and crackers in passengers’ baggage

Some of the prohibited items frequently found in check-in baggage are desiccated coconut (copra), crackers, matches, paint, camphor, ghee, pickles and other oily food items. Some of the other more common items include e-cigarettes, lighters, power banks, and spray bottles. Many travelers bring all these items without knowing regarding it. This creates risk. These items increase the severity of accidents due to their potential for explosion.

∙ Flammable materials

Last year, 943 desiccated coconuts were found in passengers’ check-in bags in just one month. As dry coconut contains high amount of oil, it can cause fire. India’s Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) added it to the list of prohibited items in March 2022. Most of the passengers are still not aware regarding this.

∙ Attention of passengers

The increasing trend of rejection of check-in baggage indicates lack of awareness among common travelers regarding prohibited or dangerous items carried on board. Authorities urge passengers to prioritize knowing and understanding the guidelines issued by the airport or airlines regarding dangerous and prohibited items.

∙ Check-in baggage screening process

The proportion of rejected check-in bags compared to the total number of bags screened increased from 0.31 per cent in December 2022 to 0.73 per cent in May. The baggage system at Mumbai airport has an 8 km baggage belt handling 9,600 bags per hour at Terminal Two and 4,800 bags per hour at Terminal One.
