Greek fire brigade has made progress in extinguishing a massive forest fire northeast of Athens. Greece’s ANA news agency quoted a fire brigade spokesman that night as saying that it was no longer a continuous wall of fire, but a series of smaller active fire sources. Meanwhile, large-scale operations against the massive inferno continue.
The fire broke out north of Athens on Sunday afternoon and quickly became Greece’s largest forest fire of the year. Experts say this is the first time a fire has come so close to the capital. The flames were just about eleven kilometers from the city center on Monday afternoon.
At times, fire crews battled the flame front, which authorities said was nearly 30 kilometers long and fueled by strong winds, covering an area of about 200 square kilometers. Thousands of people were forced from their homes, some buildings were destroyed by fire and several firefighters were injured. Some hospitals also had to be evacuated, including a children’s clinic in Pentley, according to Kathimerini newspaper.
According to reports, the Civil Protection Department issued a new advisory on Monday evening, according to which emergency services are currently concentrated in Daupentellis, Palaia, Novopentelli, Dionysos, Velicia and Afe Fire in Durness. Many countries have sent rescue workers to Greece: in addition to hundreds of firefighters, dozens of fire trucks, as well as firefighting aircraft and helicopters have been sent.
