According to Sudpresse, the inauguration of the latter, initially announced for October, would be postponed to February 2024. Information that SNCB did not wish to confirm, recalling that the work is progressing towards a finalization allowing optimal commissioning.

In June, SNCB had distributed some unpublished photos and reviewed the progress of the work. Wishing to stop looking in the rear view mirror and look back on the past 13 years, SNCB was looking to the future: the escalators had been installed, the lifts were being installed.

Regarding the footbridge, the construction of the metal structure and its cover as well as the painting are on the whole finalized. The side cladding of the access stairs and the metal cladding under the walkway will be installed in the coming months. “In the main gallery, screed, tiling and underfloor heating are installed. A good part of the glazing of the glazed partitions of the gallery is laid to delimit the different spaces. Partition walls are also being installed and, in the coming months, we will complete the installation of these partitions and false ceilings”, explained Marianne Hiernaux, spokesperson.

It will then be necessary to install the lighting and carry out the interior fittings of the reception and service areas, including the installation of special techniques (ventilation, heating and electricity). “The flooring of the main staircases to access the catwalk has also been laid. All escalators have been installed. The elevator shafts are built and their fixed structures are installed. Currently, the elevators are being installed and technically adjusted.”

At platform level, the shell of the access to the platforms has been finalized, as have the awnings above the platforms. “The quays have been paved with the exception of the ends of the quays at the level of the temporary footbridges. The platforms are therefore already functional, but several final pieces of equipment are being installed in terms of sound, lighting, benches, signage”, continues the spokesperson.

In terms of parking, changes have been observed in recent months. The first car park has been in service for several months near the Palais des Congrès. The structural work and the screeds of the Place Léopold car park have been finalized. “Finishes such as the painting of walls and floors or technical equipment are planned in the coming months. Its access on the boulevard Charles Quint side will be made following the withdrawal of the temporary station.

Finishing work around the station is underway on the Place des Congrès side, particularly for the paving at the bottom of the stairs. On the city side, the paving continues on the square. “Various road and bus connections (bus access to the station) have been made. The connection between Boulevard Charles Quint and the station will be made following the removal of the temporary station. Regarding the technical rooms and the offices of the train staff, the interior fittings and the installation of special techniques (heating, ventilation, water and electricity) are in progress.

In short, work continues to finally complete this site and allow commissioning. However, we will insist on the fact that commissioning does not necessarily mean the end of the project, since various developments will continue beyond the big day, in parallel with the disappearance of the temporary station.
