In the book, M. Desmet explains that totalitarianism is not a random phenomenon and does not appear in a vacuum. According to the professor, the origins of dictatorship are a certain type of collective psychosis. This generalization of M. Desmet is called the theory of mass formation.

In the book “Psychology of Totalitarianism”, the professor writes that the world has been gripped by a dangerous phenomenon – a type of collective hypnosis, when governments deliberately encourage the loneliness of the population, incite anxiety and fear to give way to censorship and even push the masses of people to act once morest their own interests, for example, to support natural rights, privacy restraint. According to the author, a single, focused narrative of the crisis prevails, prohibiting a different opinion.
