For 3 days, 15 biomedical maintenance engineers and technicians from the University Hospitals of Libreville, Owendo and the Mélen Hospital acquired new working methods in the exercise of their profession, thanks to a capacity building workshop. The training was jointly organized by the Ministry of Health, the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Focused on the so-called method ‘’5S Kaizen’’this training which took place at the Owendo University Hospital in Libreville, allowed participants to update themselves on good practices in biomedical maintenance and to benefit “the basics and techniques needed to improve the quality of work”, according to Annie-Chancia Moukala, participant and biomedical technician at the Hemodialysis Center of the University Hospital of Libreville.
“When you can’t troubleshoot a device because you don’t know exactly how the tool works, this unfortunately results in wasted time. Thanks to the 5S kaizen method, you can eliminate these forms of malfunctions, eliminate this waste of time, improve the quality of services provided to patients and thus reduce the number of deaths due to non-functional equipment.”stressed the Expert Trainer Isidore Kemawou Foutabong.
This training is one of the tangible manifestations of the multifaceted contributions of the partners of the Gabonese health system, mainly Japanese cooperation. “It is important that all those who have already benefited from training in biomedical maintenance can mobilize in favor of restitution to their colleagues so that they in turn benefit from this transfer of skills”said Toshimichi Adki, JICA Resident Representative in Gabon.
Obviously, this training will help ensure the safety of equipment and the efficiency of the service, bringing a significant improvement in the quality of care. “It’s good to pay for equipment, but it’s especially good to know how to maintain it. Hence the interest in taking the quality approach by training our biomedical technicians, which will allow the proper maintenance and durability of equipment, the quality of which is often criticized in our medical structures.”said Dr Christiane Mengue M’Asseko, Director General of the Estuaire-Mélen Regional Hospital Center.
