The trial of professional boxer Nabil Messaoudi will have to take place in French, the Brussels Criminal Court decided on Friday. The file will therefore be sent to a French-speaking chamber of the correctional court, where it will be heard later.

The young man must answer – with two other people, Yassine BSL and his sister – of kidnapping and attempted assassination. The trio allegedly abducted and assaulted a 28-year-old man. The suspects had all requested a change of language in order to be tried in French.

The versions differ as to the motive of the facts. The three accused are in any case all prosecuted for having forced the victim to get into a car, on May 31, 2022 in Brussels, then for having violently hit her, before leaving her for dead somewhere in Vilvoorde.

The next day, Yassine BSL’s sister was arrested and placed under an arrest warrant. A search warrant was issued for his brother the same day, and Yassine BSL surrendered himself to the police. On June 3, he was also placed under an arrest warrant.

He was then able to benefit from preventive detention under the modality of the electronic bracelet. A wanted notice had also been issued for Nabil Messaoudi, the police suspecting him of having fled to the United Kingdom, where he lives and trains.

He was eventually arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport on September 2, then handed over to Belgium on September 14. He was then also placed under electronic surveillance.
