Products you can buy tax-free

Back to school is approaching and with it, the opportunity to save on school supplies, clothing and shoes, on the Texas stage. Tax-free weekend is just around the corner, from Friday, August 9th to Sunday, August 11th, you can purchase a wide variety of school supplies without paying state sales tax.

According to the Texas Comptroller, qualifying items can be purchased tax-free at a store or online seller doing business in the state, Telemundo San Antonio reports.

“The sales tax exemption applies only to qualified items you purchase during the sales tax holiday. Items you purchase before or following the sales tax holiday do not qualify for the exemption and no tax refund is available,” the statement reads.

What can you buy during the tax-free weekend in Texas?

  • Clothing, footwear and other items
  • School Supplies
  • Masks
  • Backpacks

Items will also be available online

During the sales tax holiday weekend, you may purchase qualifying items in-store, online, by phone, mail order, custom order, or any other means. The sale of the item must take place during the specific period.

The purchase date is easy to determine when the purchase is made in-store, but it becomes more complicated with remote purchases. The buyer must have given consideration for the item during the period, even if the item cannot be delivered until following the period has ended, Comptroller Texas notes.

Can I request a refund if I pay for any of these items with taxes?

According to Comptroller Texas, if you pay sales tax during the sales tax holiday, you can ask the seller for a refund of the tax paid.

The seller may provide the refund or provide its customer with Form 00-985, Assignment of Right to Refund (PDF), which allows the buyer to file the refund claim directly with the Comptroller’s office.
