Products become unattainable due to the increase in the cost of the basic basket – 2024-07-17 00:55:45

The high cost of basic products, particularly fruits and vegetables, is causing a significant economic crisis in Guatemala, which has even led the Consumer Assistance Directorate (Diaco) to file criminal complaints; however, on a day-to-day basis, high prices make some products unattainable, mainly for those who sell prepared foods.

Prices of essential products such as potatoes, tomatoes, onions and carrots have increased three to four times in the last two weeks.

The increase in the prices of fruits and vegetables has led to significant economic pressure on consumers and has affected all sectors.

Families who traditionally rely on these products for their daily diet are now struggling to maintain their budget as prices have risen alarmingly.

This increase not only limits access to a balanced diet, but also creates financial uncertainty.

Despite the increase in the cost of living, the minimum wage in Guatemala has not experienced a significant increase to offset inflation and the increase in the prices of basic products.

This disparity between the cost of living and income has exacerbated the economic pressure on citizens, who must face an increasingly challenging financial landscape.

Given the increase in the prices of vegetables and fruits, Diaco filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) to determine whether there is speculation or not, due to the constant price increases of various products in recent weeks.

Testimonials

William Medrano, a smoothie seller, said that the economic situation is going uphill, which impacts his business, because it is difficult for them to recover their investment.

He added that a few days ago he went looking for melons and found them at Q35 each, when a few days ago they were at Q10.

He added that he previously obtained mangos for Q5 each, but now they cost Q10 each.

He also explained that oranges, one of the main products in his business, cost Q200 per hundred of said fruit.

Medrano said that, despite the fact that the products have gone up in price, he cannot increase the price of his smoothies.

Other restaurant owners said they had to raise the price of their meals, but many customers have left because of that.

They confirmed that the price of tomatoes, onions, potatoes and cilantro has increased.

Elena Mejía, who also sells food, said that sales have dropped considerably because the price of her products has increased.
