The high cost of basic products, particularly fruits and vegetables, is causing a significant economic crisis in Guatemala, which has even led the Consumer Assistance Directorate (Diaco) to file criminal complaints; however, on a day-to-day basis, high prices make some products unattainable, mainly for those who sell prepared foods.
Prices of essential products such as potatoes, tomatoes, onions and carrots have increased three to four times in the last two weeks.
The increase in the prices of fruits and vegetables has led to significant economic pressure on consumers and has affected all sectors.
Families who traditionally rely on these products for their daily diet are now struggling to maintain their budget as prices have risen alarmingly.
This increase not only limits access to a balanced diet, but also creates financial uncertainty.
Despite the increase in the cost of living, the minimum wage in Guatemala has not experienced a significant increase to offset inflation and the increase in the prices of basic products.
This disparity between the cost of living and income has exacerbated the economic pressure on citizens, who must face an increasingly challenging financial landscape.
Given the increase in the prices of vegetables and fruits, Diaco filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) to determine whether there is speculation or not, due to the constant price increases of various products in recent weeks.
