“No time”. “Nobody sees it anyway” or “It’s not important” are some of the most common excuses for not making your bed. However, it is not necessary to stage it as if it came straight out of a decoration magazine. The simple act of doing this already has a positive effect on well-being. Here are five good reasons to adopt this habit often perceived as a chore.

A task accomplished at the start of the day

Accomplishing a task in the morning is motivating.

Even if it’s minimal, making your bed is something you can cross off your to-do list. This provides a sense of pride and accomplishment that reflects a good image of oneself. A subject on which William McRaven, a former US Navy admiral, university professor and author, even wrote a book. In this book entitled “Make Your Bed”, he explains that “starting the day by making your bed gives you a feeling of pride and motivates you to do other things”.

Motivation to keep your room clean

It is well known: disorder breeds disorder. The kitchen is the perfect illustration. If there are already cups in the sink, the temptation to cram even more dishes into it is much greater than if it were empty and clean. It’s the same for the bedroom. If you make the effort to make your bed, it is very likely that the motivation to keep this room tidy is greater.

Increased productivity

Taking two minutes in the morning to make your bed can generally make you more productive.

In his book, “The Power of Habit,” journalist and best-selling author Charles Duhigg argues that making your bed increases productivity.

Anti-stress and source of happiness

We spend regarding a third of our life in the bedroom. Its appearance therefore inevitably has repercussions on the mood. A messy environment is less conducive to relaxation. A well-made bed, on the other hand, instantly makes the room seem tidier. Gretchen Rubin, author of ‘The Happiness Project’, found while researching her book that many people report being happier following getting into the habit of making their bed .

A question of aesthetics

Whether or not it is covered with a bedspread or decorative pillows, a well-made bed looks better and looks cleaner.

Certainly, we can say that, in any case, no one else will see the room. But don’t we deserve to go into a beautiful, welcoming bedroom, a bit like in a hotel, where the beds are well made and clean? The effect is the same at home, even if the sheets haven’t been changed for a while.
