Processed Foods and Type 2 Diabetes: The Hidden Dangers Revealed

An Italian study shows that even an otherwise healthy diet can contain unexpected amounts of highly processed foods: these highly processed, mostly industrially manufactured products have been associated with increased mortality in people with type 2 diabetes, regardless of the overall quality of the diet Nourishment.

High consumption of highly processed foods was associated with significantly increased mortality, particularly from cardiovascular disease, in 1,066 people with diabetes regardless of adherence to the Mediterranean diet: those who consumed more highly processed foods had a 60 percent higher mortality rate. The mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases – the most common cause of death for diabetics – was even twice as high as with low consumption, the research team reports in the specialist journal in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition”.

Highly processed foods often contain substances not typically used at home, such as: B. hydrolyzed proteins, maltodextrins and hydrogenated fats and food additives such as colors, preservatives, antioxidants, flavor enhancers and sweeteners. They are mostly used to improve taste, appearance and shelf life. One might automatically think of packaged snacks, soft drinks, ready meals and fast food. However, that is not quite the case, because these substances are often contained in supposedly healthy foods such as fruit yoghurt, breakfast cereals or meat substitutes.

Prof. Licia Iacviello from the University of Insubria in Varese and Como said: “One of the most interesting results of this study is that the increased risk associated with highly processed foods was also observed in people with a Mediterranean diet. This suggests that the benefits of the healthy Mediterranean diet can be offset by high levels of highly processed foods.”
