The Colombian consulates abroad were created with the purpose of protecting, informing and ensuring the interests of Colombian citizens abroad; and likewise, guide and collaborate with foreigners who visit Colombia in the procedures established by Colombian law. These offices are in charge of different legal procedures that help any Colombian or foreigner to have the documents and procedures corresponding to each country.
Each Consulate must comply with the same program of activities in accordance with the provisions of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, although modifications may be made due to the legislation established in the country where its headquarters are located.

How to obtain the Certificate of Survival or Certificate of Life at the Colombian Consulate in Chicago?
In accordance with article 87 of Law 2136 of 2021, on the accreditation of the proof of life (survival) of compatriots outside the country, modifying article 22 of Decree Law 019 of 2012, in all cases, the proof of life (survival) of compatriots outside the country, it will be proven before the entities that are part of the General System of Comprehensive Social Security every six (6) months through one of the following options:
- Before the consulate of the constituency where the compatriot is located.
- Before public authority of the place where the connational is located.
Requirements:
- Personal presentation before the consulate.
- Yellow ID with holograms or current Colombian passport.
If you cannot appear in person, you can contact the respective consulate to be oriented in the process and to know the documents that you must provide.
In case of advancing the procedure before a local authority, the interested party must apostillise or legalize the document issued by said authority, as well as send it to the address and agency determined for this purpose by the respective social security entity.

The Consulate’s appointment scheduling system is monthly. Appointments are made on the 15th of each month or the next business day if the 15th is on a weekend at 8:00 am Chicago time.
