The news of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict obviously did not escape our debaters. While a pro-Palestinian demonstration was held this Wednesday in Brussels and caused a lot of ink to flow, two others were banned in Paris as a security measure. So should we, yes or no, ban these demonstrations? For Jean Kitenge, “a pro-Palestinian demonstration has every reason to be able to take place, whether on a legal basis or in the light of human rights violated in the past”. The guest, however, questions the timing of these demonstrations: “Why now?” On the other hand, if it is a pro-Hamas demonstration, Jean Kitenge is clear: “It must be banned. Firstly because Hamas is not all Palestinians and then Hamas is included in a list of terrorist movements”.
For his part, Vincent Schimdt warned: “Already in 2014, rallies in France had gotten out of hand with anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist songs and slogans. The risk is real, in the current powder keg of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, of seeing the conflict interfere in the demonstration processions here at home. This is why we must ban these demonstrations, because the risk is far too great of seeing small extreme groups from one side or the other clash. It’s not a question of peaceful protest, but of risk.”
