Not so long ago, Aarwangen, Switzerland, was a pastoral village. Then the strategically located town in the canton of Bern was discovered by commuters. And those city people from the new housing estates do not always understand the countryside very well.
For example, two newcomers recently protested once morest the noise pollution known as cowbells. Charming during the day, but a non-stop hell of clang-clanging at night. They asked if the cows might be a little quieter in the evening.
That complaint resulted in a true pro-cowbell movement. More than a thousand of the five thousand residents signed a petition for the preservation of this former tracing instrument. And they immediately added the preservation of that other musical tradition: the church bell. A nearby museum devoted an exhibition to the instrument of offense.
The municipality will consider the issue next month. In the meantime, the newcomers are getting their money’s worth. One has withdrawn the complaint, the other is moving.
