At a time when some municipalities have already imposed restrictions on water consumption to compensate for possible droughts, private swimming pools continue to be popular in Switzerland. A recent survey by the RTS reveals that Switzerland has approximately 56,000 private outdoor swimming pools. According to media estimates, it would take slightly more than 3.5 billion liters of water to fill all these basins. A figure that corresponds to 0.4% of the water consumption of the whole country.

The south of Ticino and the Lake Geneva area are particularly fond of private swimming pools. Indeed, in the top 10 municipalities with the most, only one is located in German-speaking Switzerland. Of the nine remaining, one is from Vaud (Commugny), three are from Ticino (Lugano, Bellinzona and Gambarogno) and five from Geneva (Collonge-Bellerive, Veyrier, Cologny, Chêne-Bougeries and Vandoeuvres). In Geneva, they are therefore all on the left bank of the Rhône and Lake Geneva. The Municipality of Vandoeuvres also obtains the prize for the greatest number of swimming pools per inhabitant, with a rate of nearly 10%.
