According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), on the 5th, Starliner entered space aboard the United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United States, at 10:34 p.m. on the 6th. (11:34 a.m. on the 7th). , Korean time).

Two astronauts will be on board this flight. Veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunni Williams are expected to board the Starliner and head to the ISS for about eight days before returning to Earth. This flight is Boeing’s first manned space mission and, if successful as planned, it will be used in future NASA ISS transport missions.

Starliner is a manned spacecraft developed by Boeing. It measures 5m high and 4.6m in diameter and can accommodate up to 7 people. This is more than the maximum number of 4 passengers on the Crew Dragon. The company explains that the module carried by the astronauts can be reused up to 10 times.

Boeing began development of the Starliner in 2014. In line with NASA’s policy of having the private sector develop manned spacecraft to and from the ISS, an investment of $4.2 billion (approximately $5.7078 billion of KRW) was invested in the development of manned spacecraft. Until now, the United States used the Russian Soyuz spacecraft to transport the ISS.

The development of Boeing’s Starliner has not gone smoothly. Due to the failure of unmanned test flights in 2019, the schedule for crewed test flights was pushed back. Initially, it was planned to launch a manned flight in the first half of 2020. The schedule was pushed back by almost four years.

If Starliner succeeds in this test flight, it should lay the groundwork to curb SpaceX’s dominance. SpaceX and Boeing are competing to develop the ISS transport system. In 2014, SpaceX carried out the Crew Dragon manned test flights in 2020 and completed approximately 9 missions.
