(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jang Jae-eun = It has been reported that the United States is considering requesting financial support from allies and partner countries for relief in the Gaza Strip.
According to Reuters on the 12th (local time), the U.S. government is pursuing a plan to fill the gap in the preparation period before the U.S. military provides relief through the activities of the International Foundation.
The plan is to cover the monthly cost of regarding 30 million dollars (approximately 40 billion won) required for the process with support from alliance and partner countries.
In his State of the Union address to Congress on the 7th, U.S. President Joe Biden announced that a temporary port for relief would be built in the Gaza Strip and relief goods would be supplied via sea route.
However, it was pointed out that it took up to two months to complete the floating port to be used for relief, making it less effective in urgent situations.
Accordingly, the U.S. government is considering a plan to begin urgent relief in advance under the leadership of Fogbow, a private group comprised of former U.S. officials.
This plan is a response to the judgment that the suffering of Gaza residents is reaching its limit amid the war between Israel and the Palestinian armed faction Hamas.
Due to the Israeli military’s attack and blockade, and Hamas’ loss of governance, the Gaza Strip is experiencing significant difficulties in providing relief via land routes.
On the 29th of last month, in Gaza City, the largest city in the Gaza Strip, thousands of people crowded into a truck carrying relief supplies, leading to a disaster in which regarding 100 people died.

Some were reportedly shot dead by Israeli troops managing the relief work, and many others fell and were trampled or crushed to death by the crowd.
The United Nations warned that widespread starvation in the Gaza Strip was inevitable unless quick measures were taken.
Relief from private organizations following US instructions will be provided by a tugboat pulling a barge to the shore and unloading relief supplies using a crane.
Sources predicted that relief efforts might begin as early as a month later once finances for private organizations are secured.
They believe that private organizations will be able to deliver 200 truckloads of relief goods per day in containers.
This is less than the 500 units delivered per day before the war in the Gaza Strip began due to Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on October 7 last year and Israel’s retaliation.
The U.S. government announced that once the U.S. military begins relief work following the construction of the port, hundreds of truckloads of relief, including 2 million meals of food, water, and medicine, will be added per day.
Reuters reported that private companies may assist U.S. military relief efforts along the Gaza Strip.
The Biden administration has announced its policy not to send any of its own troops into Gaza while using the U.S. military to create a temporary port in the Gaza Strip.
